At the UN, Coppe highlights the integration of climate action, development, and equity

The need to reconcile the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions with socioeconomic development and equity in developing countries was at the heart of the presentation by Professor Andréa Santos, from Coppe/UFRJ’s Transport Engineering Program (PET), during the Bonn Sessions, held on June 8th, within the framework of the 64th session of the Subsidiary Bodies of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), in Bonn, Germany.
Promoted by Coppe, the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), and the New Climate Institute, the event brought together researchers, experts and policymakers to discuss how global climate goals can be translated into national strategies aligned with sustainable development.
Andréa highlighted that, although the climate crisis is global, its impacts are unequal, affecting more intensely countries in the Global South, which historically are the least responsible for greenhouse gas emissions.
According to her, climate action must integrate the mitigation of emissions and the reduction of inequality as well as strengthen the adaptation of the most vulnerable populations. The researcher also emphasized the importance of integrating mitigation and adaptation in order to simultaneously generate environmental, economic and social benefits.
As examples, she presented Brazilian experiences that combine nature-based solutions, climate-resilient transport infrastructure and renewable energy initiatives with an impact on local development.
The professor’s participation reinforces Coppe’s contribution to the international debate on climate change and to the formulation of strategies that articulate emissions reduction, socioeconomic development and equity.
