Coppe/UFRJ will be the center of discussions about the future of offshore energy in the Americas. Between April 10th and 15th, the institution will host, for the first time, the Pan-American Marine Energy Conference (Pamec) — the continent’s main conference dedicated to the development of technologies for the sustainable use of marine energy potential.
The event will bring together researchers from 20 countries and will present more than 100 scientific papers focused on the development of sustainable technological solutions for harnessing the energy potential of the oceans.
As the host country, Brazil leads in the number of papers presented, with 33 studies, followed by Colombia (16) and the United States (13). The conference will also feature experts from Mexico, the United Kingdom, Canada, Chile, Panama, Costa Rica, Italy, China and the Netherlands, among other countries.
During the event, researchers and experts will discuss new technological frontiers, scientific challenges and international cooperation opportunities for the development of the so-called blue energy.
The scope of the conference covers a wide range of offshore renewable sources, such as:
- offshore wind power;
- wave energy;
- tidal energy;
- ocean currents;
- thermal and salinity ocean gradients.
Also on the agenda will be the production of renewable hydrogen and the synergies between ocean energy and the decarbonization of the offshore oil and gas sector.
Among the works presented, some specializations by country stand out. Brazilian researchers focus on studies in offshore wind and mapping of energy potential. Colombians present research on tidal energy and salinity gradients, while Costa Ricans address wave energy. In the United States, numerical modeling studies predominate and Mexican researchers present advances in OTEC (ocean thermal energy conversion). British specialists contribute with research on converters, turbines, OTEC and socioeconomic impacts.
Pamec will also bring together some of the leading names in applied research in offshore renewable energy, reinforcing Coppe’s role as one of the reference centers in the area of energy and sustainability. The event is supported by Petrobras (lead sponsor); Ocean Energy Systems (OES); Streamwise; Lloyd Register; Fundy Ocean Research Centre for Energy (Force) and American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). Keep an eye on the pamec.energy website for updates. Registration is still open, don’t miss this opportunity to build knowledge and network. Participate!
