Professor Roberto Schaeffer was recognized with the Lifetime Achievement Award, granted by the Integrated Assessment Modeling Consortium (IAMC), an international organization that brings together the leading research groups dedicated to integrated assessment — a fundamental approach for climate policy planning at local, national and global scales.
In charge of the Cenergia laboratory, Schaeffer coordinated studies, for more than 25 years, that resulted in the development of integrated assessment models (IAMs) which placed Coppe among the most prominent institutions in the world in the creation of climate scenarios and in supporting the formulation of public policies.
Among these models are Coffee — the only one developed in a developing country with the capacity to simulate global scenarios for mitigating climate change — as well as Blues and Tea. These tools have been fundamental for scenario analysis, the design of mitigation and adaptation strategies and the establishment of realistic goals for Brazil to advance in fulfilling the commitments made under the Paris Agreement, including the pursuit of carbon neutrality.
The recognition granted by the IAMC highlights the impact of these contributions both on climate science and on the training of researchers and the strengthening of the participation of emerging countries in global debates on climate change.
A member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC), Schaeffer has been among the most important climate scientists and among those who most influence climate policies in the world.
