On November 11th, Coppe/UFRJ, in partnership with the Scientific and Technological Institute of Civil Defense (ICTDEC) of the State of Rio de Janeiro, held the III Meeting with Science, aimed at presenting and debating innovative solutions for improving disaster response. The event brought together researchers, public managers and representatives of society, focusing on strengthening communities and saving lives through science, technology and multisectoral cooperation.
The meeting highlighted the importance of integrating academic research, state operations, and community knowledge, promoting more efficient and effective actions in civil defense. As Coppe’s vice-director, Marcello Campos, pointed out, “the answer to mitigating the effects of disasters involves technology and Coppe has always been at the center of these solutions for the benefit of society.”

Projects and platforms developed by Coppe were presented, such as Droneiros Voluntários, Rede Refugia and the Rota platform, in its final stages of development, which uses virtual simulations to guide evacuations in at-risk areas. Regarding the initiative, professor Tharcisio Fontainha, coordinator of Ceped, highlighted: “The Rota platform allows citizens to quickly learn what to do in disaster situations, combining science and practice.”
The event reinforced Coppe’s strategy of uniting different research groups around disaster response, promoting collaboration between engineering programs to develop integrated and technological solutions. “The partnership between the State, society and science has shown concrete results in protecting communities,” stated Cristina Rosário, coordinator of the Nudec of the Cuiabá Valley and surrounding areas, and a participant in the meeting.

Also participating in the opening of the event were the Undersecretary of State for Civil Defense, Firefighter Colonel Charbio Marchett Guijarro; the director of the Scientific and Technological Institute of Civil Defense RJ (ICTDEC), Firefighter Colonel Márcio Maradei; and the operational superintendent of the State Secretariat for Civil Defense, Firefighter Colonel Joelson Oliveira.
By putting scientific research at the service of society, Coppe consolidates its role as a strategic agent in the development of technologies and methodologies that improve risk management and disaster response, strengthening cooperation between academia, the State and the population.
Watch the event in its entirety, in the morning and afternoon sessions.
