On September 21 at 2:30 p.m., Coppe/UFRJ will open the exhibition “Flying on Campus,” featuring part of a photographic collection of the more than 200 birds that have been cataloged on the University Campus. The exhibition is curated by professor Sergio Lima Netto of the Electrical Engineering Program and combines his own material with the collection of Alfredo Heleno de Oliveira, a retired employee of the University Administration who dedicated more than 40 years to documenting and photographing the birds that inhabit Fundão Island or pass through it during their migration.
This exhibition marks the opening of a new space at Espaço Coppe, in Block I, called “A look beyond engineering.” The new space, located in niche 2 (between rooms I-106 and I-108, near the end of Block C of the Technology Center), aims to demonstrate, through temporary art exhibitions, how the so-called “hard sciences” are not disconnected from artistic sensibility and our connection to the environment around us.
The complete collection of photographic records of 215 species, accompanied by brief bilingual descriptions (Portuguese/English) compiled by Professor Sérgio Lima Netto and Alfredo Heleno de Oliveira, will be published in early 2027 in the book “UFRJ Bird Guide (Ilha do Fundão).” The work also features scientific review by Professor Vânia Soares Alves of the Institute of Biology, who works at the institute’s Ornithology Laboratory.
The exhibition at the Technology Center aims to raise awareness and foster environmental consciousness among the community that lives, works, studies, and conducts research in science and technology in the country. The central objective is to remind people that scientific knowledge focused on social development is not separate from the environment; it must go hand in hand with respect, care, and the active preservation of nature.
