Coppe/UFRJ researchers will present, on June 1st, the advances of the PRISMA-RJ Project — Integration, Sustainability and Development in Mobility in Rio de Janeiro Project —, an initiative that brings together technical studies aimed at the future implementation of Metro Line 3. The project foresees the connection between Niterói, São Gonçalo and Itaboraí, integrated with the city of Rio de Janeiro and other metropolitan transport systems.
The event will be attended by municipal, state and federal authorities and will be held from 9:30 a.m., at the Windsor Florida Hotel (1st floor), located at Rua Ferreira Viana, 81, Flamengo, Rio de Janeiro. The presentation marks one year since the official launch of the initiative, which took place in June 2025, in the Coppe auditorium. Those interested in participating can register using this form.
Coordinated by Professor Rômulo Orrico, from Coppe’s Transport Engineering Program, the project seeks to contribute to sustainable mobility, metropolitan integration and the reduction of territorial inequalities, linking transportation infrastructure and urban development.
“We are structuring a robust technical base to support strategic decisions on metropolitan mobility in Rio de Janeiro. Line 3 represents a historic opportunity for regional integration, with direct impacts on accessibility, economic development and the population’s quality of life,” says Orrico.
Among the main results already achieved are the completion of the executive work plan, the organization of urban, socioeconomic and operational databases, in addition to conducting interviews, listening workshops and field research. Urban, operational, legal and regulatory diagnoses have also advanced.
The researchers also developed urban planning and line conception studies, including analyses of route alternatives, station typologies and visual representations. Currently, the modeling and simulation of the transport system are underway, as well as studies on the sizing of provision and infrastructure, which will serve as the basis for the preliminary design, cost estimation and economic-financial evaluation.
“PRISMA-RJ is based on an integrated vision of mobility, territory and sustainability. More than a transportation project, it is a structuring initiative for the metropolitan development of Rio de Janeiro,” highlights the coordinator.
The project is developed in two laboratories at Coppe/UFRJ: the Network of Studies in Transport Engineering and Socioeconomics (Reset) and the Laboratory of Optimization and Geographic Information Systems (OPTGIS).
