Professor Ariane Batista, coordinator of the Nanotechnology Engineering Program (PENt) at Coppe/UFRJ, was inducted as an affiliate member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC) on Tuesday, September 23. This category recognizes young researchers of excellence and also serves as a way to honor and raise the profile of the new generation of Brazilian scientists.
The induction ceremony was held at ABC’s headquarters in downtown Rio and brought together the new affiliate members, who presented their academic and research backgrounds. In her presentation titled “From pharmacy to nanotechnology engineering: a journey in pursuit of innovation in health,” Ariane Batista explained how her background in pharmacy led her to research in nanotechnology engineering.
In addition to Ariane, the following individuals received their diplomas: Daniel Sedorko (National Museum/UFRJ), Fernanda Ferreira Cruz (Carlos Chagas Filho Institute of Biophysics/UFRJ), João Pedro Gonçalves Ramos (IMPA), and Luana da Silva Magalhães Forezi (UFF).
The ABC’s affiliate member category was created in 2007 to recognize outstanding young scientists, aged 40 or younger, from different regions of the country. Each year, five researchers are elected from each of the six regions recognized by the Academy for five-year, non-renewable terms.
Ariane Batista is a researcher in the field of nanotechnology applied to health. Check out her profile on the ABC website. Ariane’s presentation can be viewed in the video of the ceremony, available on ABC’S Youtube channel. Her segment begins at 5:12.
