Professor Renato Cotta, from Coppe/UFRJ’s Mechanical Engineering Program, was elected to the Academia Europaea – AE, one of the most prestigious international scientific institutions.
The election places Coppe within a select global circuit of academic excellence. The AE brings together approximately 5,500 members, including 88 Nobel Prize laureates, and works to promote and disseminate knowledge in areas ranging from natural and technological sciences to humanities, law and social and economic sciences
Renato Cotta is the first Brazilian, who was born in the country, to integrate the Academia. Among the members is also emeritus professor from UFRJ’s Physics Institute, Takeshi Kodama, who was born in Manchúria and is based in Brazil.
By joining this international network of researchers, Coppe expands its presence in strategic forums that discuss solutions for contemporary challenges, with direct impacts on society and the economy.
The professor was elected to the Engineering section, currently composed of 65 members — 48 from Europe and 17 from other continents. The election process is rigorous and involves nomination by experts, detailed analysis of academic production and validation by the Academy Council. Cotta’s election was announced on April 2nd.
Professor at Coppe since 1988, Renato Cotta is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC), the National Academy of Engineering (ANE), and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), based in Italy. He currently also serves as a technical consultant to the General Directorate of Nuclear and Technological Development of the Brazilian Navy.
