Coppe took a strategic step in the internationalization of its scientific production and advanced engineering training. During the China-Brazil Forum on Engineering Education, held on December 10th at the UFRJ School of Chemistry, the university and the China University of Petroleum (CUP-Beijing) promoted a mutual accreditation of professors from both institutions, recognizing the joint effort to expand academic and scientific cooperation between the two countries. From UFRJ, seven Coppe professors were officially accredited to work at the China-Brazil Institute of Outstanding Engineers, a milestone that reinforces the institution’s leading role in building this bilateral partnership.
The new institute, headed by Professor Cristiano Borges from Coppe’s Chemical Engineering Program, is born as a center of excellence dedicated to the training of highly qualified engineers and cutting-edge scientific production, bringing together efforts from Brazil and China in strategic areas for energy transition and technological development.
The event celebrated the first year of bilateral collaboration and consolidated the institute as an international platform for teaching and research, focusing on topics such as energy security, low carbon, bioenergy, artificial intelligence and ocean engineering.
Among the mechanisms that structure the program are joint laboratories, double degrees, shared supervision and mixed evaluation committees. The institutions also announced plans to expand into new areas and strengthen university-industry cooperation, with companies from the energy, biotechnology and ocean technology sectors involved from the design of the curricula.
With joint projects underway, initial research results and graduates working in strategic sectors, the Brazil-China partnership is consolidating as an innovative model of South-South cooperation, oriented towards science, technology and sustainable development. The initiative paves the way for expanding student mobility, creating new integrated laboratories and strengthening Coppe’s presence in global engineering networks, reinforcing UFRJ’s role in training engineers who will face the energy challenges of the 21st century.
