Coppe/UFRJ began the week strengthening its international ties and expanding opportunities for its students with a visit from Tsinghua University—China’s leading engineering institution and Coppe’s strategic partner in the China-Brazil Center for Climate Change and Innovative Energy Technologies.
Led by Professor Wenkai Liang, ten doctoral students and five undergraduate students were welcomed by Director for Academic Affairs, Professor Jean-David Caprace, and the Executive Secretary of the China-Brazil Center, Rejane Rocha. The delegation learned about Coppe’s scientific expertise, interdisciplinarity and the international reach of Coppe’s research, in addition to visiting two leading laboratories: the Alternative Energy Sources Laboratory (Lafae) and the Control and Automation, Application Engineering and Development Laboratory (Lead).
The cooperation between Coppe and Tsinghua, which began in 2008, offers students and faculty from both institutions opportunities for academic exchange, joint project development and access to global research networks. “Our joint work maps out connection points that generate benefits for both parties”, explained Rejane Rocha.

For Professor Wenkai Liang, the visit was also a chance to experience Brazilian culture and deepen the friendship between China and Brazil, at a time of intensifying cooperation between the countries. He emphasized his interest in learning firsthand about the achievements and development trends in low-carbon energy and sustainability in Brazil—a country with an abundance of renewable resources.
By hosting and interacting with leading global institutions, Coppe not only reaffirms its global academic prominence but also broadens the horizons of its students, who increasingly find doors open to international experiences, connections and challenges.
