Magnetic levitation under discussion – Coppe receives delegation from Hunan

One of the most modern technologies under discussion for public transportation, magnetic levitation, was the topic of a visit by a delegation of representatives from institutions in Hunan province, in south-central China, to Coppe/UFRJ this Wednesday, June 24th. The delegation was led by Liang Xiao, executive director of the Hunan Rail Technology Application Research Center, and Liu Tianbao, president of the Hunan Maglev Group.
In Changsha, the provincial capital, the Hunan Rail Transit Holding Group has been operating a magnetic levitation (Maglev) train line for ten years, connecting Changsha South Railway Station to the Changsha International Airport.
The Chinese officials came to learn about the technology used in the MagLev-Cobra, the magnetic levitation train developed at Coppe. The Changsha Maglev uses electromagnetic suspension (EMS) technology, while the Coppe Maglev operates using superconductivity technology, which, among other advantages and particularities, allows for the construction of lighter structures.
The visit was led by Professor Richard Stephan, from the Electrical Engineering Program, coordinator of the project.
