Coppe/UFRJ welcomed this last Friday, August 23rd, ExxonMobil executives, the largest oil company in the United States and the third largest one in the world in terms of market value. Exxon was the first oil and gas company to establish activities in Brazil, still under the name of Standard Oil, in 1912.
During the meeting, Coppe professors presented the institution’s expertise in three areas, listed as priorities by Exxon in their research and development plans, to fulfill the obligations of the R,D&I clause from the Brazilian National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP).
Professors Luis Sagrilo and Fernando Souza, from the Civil Engineering Program (PEC), talked about the analysis and reliability of offshore structures; professor Celio Costa addressed the contribution to Metallurgical and Materials Engineering in the upstream (first phase of the commodity chain, which involves the activities on exploration, development and oil and natural gas production); and professor Paulo Couto, also from PEC, presented the potential of carbon capture projects, using the accumulated knowledge in porous media.
According to Coppe’s director, professor Suzana Kahn, the ExxonMobil executives came from Houston (Texas, EUA – headquarters for Upstream, Downstream and several associated services) to identify research and developing opportunities that might interest them. “They’re trying to match what they need to research to the expertise that exists in Brazil. So, they listed three priority areas. This is the beginning, from hereon other collaboration opportunities may arise. We would like for Coppe to be Exxon’s home in Brazil” stated professor Suzanna.
Also participating in the meeting were Coppe’s Director for Technology and Innovation, professor Marysilvia Costa; Li-Bong Lee, manager of Deepwater and Well Technology Portfolio for Exxon; Wei Ren; manager of Deepwater Infrastructure; Ginny Garriques, Chief Engineer for Pipelines, Offshore and Infrastructure; Marcio Bastos, manager of P&D in Brazil; and Rogerio Soares, Technology consultant.
The company became well known in Brazil, with the Esso brand and the character Tiger at gas stations, in addition to the Esso Reporter, that later on originated the Esso Journalism Award, one of the most prestigious awards in the history of the Brazilian press for decades.
