Coppe/UFRJ and partner institutions will bring together experts on decarbonization, energy transition and climate change this Wednesday, October 8th, at the French Consulate in Rio de Janeiro to discuss one of the central themes of the Paris Agreement: “Achieving climate neutrality: how to ensure a just transition?”
Promoted by Centro Clima, laboratory linked to the Energy Planning Program (PPE), in partnership with the Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations (IDDRI) and the World Resources Institute (WRI), the event is supported by the French Consulate and the Institut Français.
The meeting seeks to discuss the conditions which will enable large emerging economies, such as Brazil, to advance towards carbon neutrality, ensuring that this process will happen in a socially just manner, with economic growth combined with the reduction of inequalities and poverty.
Participants include authorities and researchers that are leading the global climate debate:
- Ambassador André Corrêa do Lago, Vice Minister for Climate, Energy, and Environment of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and President of COP30;
- Ana Toni, Executive Director of COP30;
- Céline Kauffmann, of IDDRI;
- Jean-Charles Hourcade, of the International Center for Research on Environment and Development (CIRED);
- Professor Emilio La Rovere, coordinator of the Climate Center/Coppe/UFRJ;
- Researchers Carolina Dubeux and William Wills, of the Climate Center/Coppe/UFRJ;
- Professor Suzana Kahn, Director of Coppe/UFRJ;
- Professor Marcello Campos, Vice Director of Coppe/UFRJ.
The seminar is inspired by the discussions in the 2025 Report – A Decade of Climate Action: Review and Perspectives, launched on October 6th at the Brazilian Embassy in Paris by the Deep Decarbonization Trajectories (DDP) initiative.
Also part of the reflections is the international project “2050 is Now,” coordinated by IDDRI in partnership with WRI, Centro Clima/Coppe, and other international institutions, with support from the German government’s International Climate Initiative (IKI).
The project stimulates dialogue between specialists from different countries to identify challenges and opportunities for international cooperation, supporting governments in developing long-term low-emissions (LTS) development strategies.
By actively participating in these initiatives, Coppe/UFRJ reaffirms its strategic role in the scientific and technical formulation of solutions to face climate change, contributing to Brazil and the world moving towards a fair, inclusive and sustainable energy transition.
