Coppe showcases technologies and participates in strategic discussions at Rio Innovation Week

Coppe/UFRJ will be participating in Rio Innovation Week 2026 (RIW) from August 4 to 7, showcasing technologies developed by its researchers and taking part in discussions on innovation, infrastructure, and technological development in Brazil. Now in its sixth edition, the event will take place from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Pier Mauá — Rodrigues Alves Avenue, 10, Praça Mauá.

At the UFRJ space, organized by InovaUFRJ and the Pro-Rectory for Extension (PR5), several research projects will be presented that demonstrate the university’s potential to transform scientific knowledge into technologies that benefit society. The UFRJ booth will be located at Armazém Kobra.

Among the highlights will be MagLev-Cobra, a magnetic levitation train developed by the Electrical Engineering Program at Coppe. The technology uses a levitation system that allows the vehicle to move without direct contact with the tracks, reducing friction and providing a more efficient alternative for urban transportation. On the last day of the event, visitors will be able to watch a live demonstration of how the levitation system works on a track set up at the UFRJ booth.

The healthcare sector will also be represented by three technologies developed in Coppe’s Biomedical Engineering Program. One of them is a low-cost integrated system for performing electrocardiograms and remotely monitoring patients. Another is a noninvasive electrical stimulation device designed to reduce tremors caused by Parkinson’s disease. The third technology to be presented is ChaTB, a chatbot currently under development to assist healthcare professionals in tuberculosis prevention, designed to respond to information requests from frontline healthcare workers.

Also on display throughout the four-day event will be the port crane simulator developed by the Laboratory of Computational Methods in Engineering (Lamce). The technology reproduces, in a 3D virtual environment integrated with real physical cabins, the activities carried out in port operations. The simulator allows users to experience operating the equipment as if they were at a port, including adverse conditions such as wind and rain.

The UFRJ space will additionally feature three-day workshops (on the 4th, 5th, and 7th) on EDS Maker, a university extension program run by Casulo da Coppe that uses technology to transform plastic waste—such as PET bottles—into filaments for 3D printers. In addition, the Coppe Business Incubator will play a prominent role on the 6th, featuring startup pitches and an exhibition, as well as hosting the panel “Start sua ideia conosco” (Start your idea with us). During this panel, Diego Lelis, Biotech Lead, and Rebeca Amaral, Social Innovation Lead, will present opportunities to turn ideas into innovative businesses, as well as updates on the Incubator’s upcoming calls for proposals.

Coppe’s schedule at RIW also includes participation in panel discussions on the technological challenges facing cities. On the first day of the event, at 5:30 p.m., Professor Suzana Kahn, director of Coppe, will participate in the panel “A City That Works: Innovation in Invisible Infrastructure,” which will discuss how technology, data, and innovation are transforming areas essential to the functioning of cities, such as urban conservation, drainage, preventive maintenance, and adaptation to extreme weather events. In addition, several startups based at the Coppe Business Incubator will be present, participating in panels and showcasing their services at Galpão do Armazém 5.
