CarbonAir Energy, the first technology-based startup in the Brazilian market that develops systems for capturing and utilizing carbon dioxide, was one of the 12 startups selected for the 2024 Shell StartUp Engine Global Program.
The selection took into consideration startups that have potential to promote innovating changes in an intelligent and sustainable business scenario and the choice of CarbonAir confirms the relevance of its research in carbon capture and use, propelled by the Faperj “Doutor Empreendedor” Program, in which it participated while supported by Coppe’s Business Incubator.
Shell’s Program, which lasts four months, offers access to mentors, specialists from Shell and the innovation ecosystem, in addition to collaborative modules, workshops and individual guidance. The startups also have the opportunity to connect with Startupbootcamp, the globally recognized accelerator, as well as with an international network of participants and former students.
Located at UFRJ’s Science Park, CarbonAir Energy focuses on capturing carbon directly from the air and from stationary sources. Its filters are capable of removing more than 200 kg of CO₂ per ton, with an efficiency of over 90%. The startup’s technology transforms the captured carbon into carbonates and synthetic fuels, which can be used in several industries, enabling circularity and sustainability throughout the production chain.
