The Waves and Currents Laboratory (LOC) from COPPE/UFRJ’s Ocean Engineering Program is settling a partnership with Glocal Otec, a British company of the renewable energy sector, for academic and research cooperation in the Ocean Renewable Energy area, using Thermal Energy conversion. On January 16th, a MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) was signed, between Coppe and the company, which provides for visits and exchange of postgraduate and/or undergraduate students for studies and research; in addition to technicians involved in joint research activities.
According to Coppe’s Ocean Engineering professors, Joel Sena Sales Junior and Antonio Carlos Fernandes, Loc/Coppe’s executive and scientific coordinators, the partnership has great potential to leverage the advancement of this technology, which is promising for the renewable energy generation.
Global Otec was motivated to partner with Coppe after its participation in the 10th OTEC International Symposium, held in December 2024 and promoted by Loc and the Brazilian Society of Naval Engineering (Sobena). On the occasion, the company’s delegation made technical visits to Coppe’s Ocean Technology Laboratory (LabOceano) and to the space where the Ocean Energy Laboratory (Leno) will operate. After getting to know the institution’s infrastructure, the delegation expressed interest in establishing a collaboration for studies on Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC).
“We offered them a more detailed view of the advances that are shaping Brazil’s role in ocean technology,” summarizes Professor Antonio Carlos.
