Coppe/UFRJ researchers were part of the winning team in the international competition “Smart City 2030: Sustainable Urban Development Management in BRICS Countries”, with the project “Sustainable Urban Development Management in BRICS Countries”. The project aims to integrate small modular reactors (SMRs) for energy generation and water desalination in the island, with the purpose of reducing CO₂ emissions, improving water supply and generating hydrogen.
The competition, which was organized locally, also included the participation of teams from China, Russia, India, Brazil, among other countries, and each country was awarded in two categories: First Place and Grand Prix.
The Brazilian team, which achieved victory, also included the participation of Luis Lionel Salas Ramón, a researcher from Coppe’s Nuclear Engineering Program (PEN) as well as Jadna Mendes, a PhD holder from PEN. Besides Coppe, the Brazilian team also included the collaboration of researchers from UFMG and USP.
Coppe had a fundamental role in the competition’s coordination in Brazil, which included the participation of two other teams from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). The projects of all participating countries were evaluated based on criteria such as innovation, viability, social impact and alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Each finalist excelled in addressing critical urban challenges, such as intelligent infrastructure, green energy, waste management and digitalization. The goal of the projects was to contribute to the building of sustainable, resilient and inclusive cities in the BRICS area until 2030.
Besides Coppe’s victory, the team from the Federal University of Ceará (UFC) won the Grand Prix with the project “SenseAIR: Smart Way to Clear Skies”, a low-cost air quality sensor for monitoring pollution in urban environments, demonstrated in the city of Fortaleza, Brazil.
The award ceremony was held last Friday, November 22nd, during the International Municipal BRICS+ Forum, with the presence of Coppe’s Deputy Director for Technology and Innovation, professor Thiago Aragão.
This achievement highlights Coppe’s role in technological innovation and the development of sustainable solutions to urban challenges.
