Six students from Coppe/UFRJ’s Ocean Engineering Program participated in an important academic internationalization experience by representing the institution at the China-LAC Young Scholars Symposium on Ocean Energy, carried out from June 18th to 21st, in the city of Qingdao, China. The event was promoted by the China University of Petroleum (CUP – East China) and Qingdao University, with support from Chinese and Saudi Arabian research centers.
The symposium brought together, in person and online, around one hundred researchers from five countries — China, Brazil, Peru, Ecuador and Chile — promoting an environment for technical-scientific dialogue and cultural exchange. On behalf of Coppe, the participants were Daniela Morocho Lindao, Edgar Chavez Hipolito, Eduardo Azevedo Gomes, Gabriel Lopes, Hema Carla Moreira and Luis Chambizea Flores.
During the event, students presented their research works and debated cutting-edge topics in the area of ocean energy, including: offshore oil extraction; safety assessment of offshore pipelines and risers; intelligent algorithms for offshore drilling; dynamic response of flexible risers in deepwater; repair of offshore structures; and optimization of the control of floating offshore wind turbines.

In addition to strengthening Coppe’s international presence, participating in the symposium represented a valuable opportunity for academic and professional development for the students, allowing direct contact with foreign researchers, exposure to different approaches and realities and the experience of scientific cooperation in an international context. These experiences contribute to the students’ global development and represent one of the distinguishing features in the graduate programs offered by Coppe.
The symposium had as executive chairs professors Jean-David Caprace (Coppe/UFRJ) and Guangming Fu (CUP – East China), and, as honorary presidents, professors Segen Estefen (Coppe and director of the National Institute for Ocean Research – INPO) and Baojiang Sun (CUP – East China). The event was also supported by the China-Saudi Arabia Oil and Energy “Belt and Road” Joint Laboratory and the ShandongKey Laboratory of Offshore Oil & Gas and Hydrates Development.
Coppe and UPC have a solid cooperation base. In the last years, the two institutions have colaborated in joint projects, such as the Cooperation Program in Innovation and specialists exchange, financed by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC); and the International Youth Exchange Program (CEP), supported by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security of China.
