In early September, Stanford University released the latest version of the database of the world’s most cited researchers, the updated science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators. This is the seventh edition of the project, which wishes to provide standardized metrics to evaluate the impact of researchers in several areas of knowledge and list the most influential scientists.
In this ranking, a hundred thousand researchers were classified into 22 scientific fields and 174 sub-fields. The lists present those within a percentile rank of 2% or above regarding greatest influence in their sub-field of activity, both in 2023 and all throughout their career, according to the established criteria.
In the career-long impact list, which has around 217 thousand researchers, Brazil appears with 1.077 scientists.
In the 2023 specific impact list, which has approximately 223 thousand researchers, Brazil is present with 1.340 researchers.
More than sixty UFRJ professors, with a significant participation of Coppe professors, are featured in each list.
The prominence of UFRJ researchers in general, and of Coppe, in particular, confirms the quality of the research being carried out at the university and its international reach (and recognition). However, it is important to be aware of the reading of different rankings of academic excellence that use other criteria, metrics and methodologies, which do not allow for absolute evaluations.
The listings that highlight the most influential researchers, according to the adopted criteria, reaffirm the importance of federal and state-owned public institutions in consolidating cutting-edge research in the country, both in terms of relevance and impact over time.
