COP 30, the largest global meeting on climate change, has begun and Coppe/UFRJ is already standing out in the first days of the conference, actively participating in debates, panels and strategic events on the planet’s energy and climate future.
On Tuesday (11/11), Coppe organized the seminar “Planning the Brazilian Energy Transition,” held at the Museu das Amazônias. The event brought together representatives from academia, the productive sector and the government to discuss a crucial topic: how Brazil can conduct its energy transition in a fair, safe and sustainable way, ensuring accessible and reliable energy for all Brazilians.
Among the highlights of the meeting were discussions about the role of hydroelectric power in the new context of the energy transition. Faced with the challenges posed by climate change, the debate addressed the need to rethink the role of these sources in the national electricity matrix, reconciling energy security and environmental sustainability.

The panel included the participation of Coppe’s director, Professor Suzana Kahn, professors Andréa Santos, Emílio La Rovere and Marco Aurélio Santos, and researcher Carolina Dubeaux, who contributed with insights on public policies, the integration of renewable energy sources, energy efficiency and financing instruments to enable the transition.
In addition to holding the seminar, Coppe was present at the inauguration of the GAUC Pavilion, strengthening its international role in addressing climate change. UFRJ, through Coppe, is part of the Global Alliance of Universities on Climate (GAUC) — an international network of universities that collaborates in formulating strategies and solutions to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy.

Throughout COP30, Coppe will be present at panels, roundtables and parallel events organized in partnership with Brazilian and international institutions. The debates will address fundamental themes for the future of the planet, such as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), the Brazilian energy transition, the decarbonization of transport, innovation in biofuels and sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), the circular economy, climate risk and disaster management and climate finance mechanisms.
With its trajectory of more than six decades in research and innovation, Coppe reinforces, once again, its role as a strategic institution in building solutions for Brazil’s development.
