Coppe establishes a strategic presence at the 2026 Energy Summit

Coppe/UFRJ had a significant presence at the 2026 Energy Summit, considered the largest event of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the world. Between June 23rd and 25th, at Marina da Glória, the institution presented research, technologies, startups and academic contributions in strategic debates about the future of energy and the transition to a low-carbon economy.
Innovation highlighted at the Embrapii-Coppe stand
During the three-day event, the Embrapii-Coppe stand showcased technologies aimed at faster production of offshore equipment, increased safety on oil platforms and prevention of oil spills in the oceans. The solutions also contribute to reducing dependence on foreign suppliers and strengthening the competitiveness of the national oil and gas industry. também contribuem para reduzir a dependência de fornecedores estrangeiros e fortalecer a competitividade da indústria nacional de petróleo e gás.

The public was able to experience, through virtual reality glasses, the behavior of offshore platforms under waves, winds and currents. The topic is studied by the Ocean Technology Laboratory (LabOceano), in partnership with Petrobras, that develops techniques based on artificial intelligence to make analyses faster and more accurate.
Technologies from the National Welding Technology Laboratory (LNTSold) and Gscar, in partnership with Shell, were also presented, including the 3D metallic printing of components for the oil and gas industry, as well as the Ariel drone, developed with Repsol Sinopec Brasil, capable of detecting oil spills in the open sea.
Startups from the Incubator showcase solutions for energy and decarbonization
Coppe also had a presence at the Startup Village, with companies from its Incubator presenting solutions for the energy transition and decarbonization.
Among the participants were Elétrons Livres, Carbonair Energy, Aquapower, Flowprint, Delta Entech and Orion Sic, which showcased technologies for more efficient and sustainable energy generation, reinforcing the incubator’s role as an environment for transforming research into business.
Coppe participates in debates about the future of energy

Coppe’ director, professor Suzana Kahn, participated in the panel “The Triple Helix in the country’s economic development,” which discussed the articulation between government, companies and universities to boost innovation and competitiveness.
According to the director, more than half of the deep tech startups in Brazil are academic spin-offs, especially in the Southeast, which highlights the weight of academia alongside the productive sector. “The third helix, the government, needs to have more protagonism in the articulation of this ecosystem, in the definition of purposes, and in the creation of regulatory and financial instruments,” she emphasized. She participated in the panel alongside Elias Ramos de Souza, director of Innovation at Finep; Lilian Melo, executive manager of Cenpes; and Marcelo Viana, general director of Impa.

Research Excellence and Award-Winning Students
The excellence of Coppe’s studies was also present at the Science Village, the official academic space of the Global Energy Summit, focused on connecting researchers, students and representatives from industry, government and innovation in the energy sector. There, Professor Jean-David Caprace, from Coppe’s Ocean Engineering Program and who is also the institution’s Director for Academic Affairs, participated in a panel discussion on the ocean as an energy system and its potential for decarbonization, as well as the current stage of research for its implementation.

Coppe’s academic output was also recognized with awards given to students at the event. Two students from the Ocean Engineering Program (PENO) received awards, both focused on solutions for offshore wind energy, in the areas of digitalization and turbine reliability, reinforcing the institution’s leadership in applied research for the energy transition. Doctoral student Matheus Poggio (PPE) also received an award for his study on optimizing the production and logistics of biomethane and CCS.

- Yuchen Gu, from the Ocean Engineering Program (Peno), recognized for a study on the structural reliability of offshore wind turbines and solutions for performance improvement.
- Matheus Poggio, from the Energy Planning Program (PPE), for the work “GROOT: An optimization platform for the production and logistics of biomethane and CCS”.
Coppe reinforces leading role in energy transition
Coppe’s presence at the 2026 Energy Summit highlights the integration between research, innovation and talent development, with simultaneous activity in laboratories, startups, partnerships with companies and global debates about the future of energy.
