From the 24th to the 27th of February of 2025, Coppe/UFRJ will welcome 22 specialists from Europe and Indonesia to the last open meeting of the Silvanus Project, focused on the creation of an Integrated, Technological and Information Platform for Fire Management. The event is strategic, given the growing intensification of fires in recent years, making the platform an essential tool to face this global challenge.

With the participation of specialists from around 50 foreign institutions, including the European Union, Australia and Indonesia, Coppe is the project’s sole representative of the American continent, through its Technology Transfer Center (NTT). The platform’s main mission is to prevent ignition and to control, in an intelligent manner, the spreading of forest fires around the world, promoting a more efficient use of available resources.
Coordinating the studies at Coppe is the responsibility of professors Nelson Ebecken and Rogério Espíndola, both from NTT, linked to the Civil Engineering Program. They are leading the construction of a digital knowledge database on fire management in Brazil, in addition to evaluating new methods of machine learning to analyse forest fires. Mobilizing local partners and adapting project materials to Portuguese are also the responsibility of the professors, who seek to engage society in the issue.
The event will feature lectures from specialists and public national authorities, and will also be open to the public, with mandatory subscriptions through Coppe’s project events website. The meeting will be held at Coppe’s auditorium, Block G, room 122, at UFRJ’s Technology Center, located at Avenida Horácio Macedo, 2030, Cidade Universitária. It will also be broadcast through Coppe’s auditorium channel on YouTube.
