Students

General Information for Students

Check out some information and processes that are relevant to Coppe students throughout their academic life.

Each term, students must register for classes directly through the SIGA system.

Should a student fail to sign up for classes in any term, they will be automatically withdrawn from the program.

Coppe students can sign up for and take classes outside the Program in which they have enrolled.

The student can check the status of their registration for classes through the CRID (Confirmation of Registration) available in the SIGA.

The maximum period for a Master’s student to become a candidate is 2 years from the date of their enrollment at COPPE, and for this purpose, they need to have completed the minimum course load and passed the qualifying exam.

Students/candidates have a maximum term of 3 years, from the date of their enrollment at Coppe, to defend their Master’s dissertation.

The maximum period for a doctorate student to become a candidate is 3 years from the date of their enrollment at Coppe, and for this purpose, they need to have completed the minimum course load and passed the qualifying exam.

Students/candidates have a maximum term of 5 years, from the date of their enrollment at Coppe, to defend their doctoral thesis.

Students graded D in more than one class will be withdrawn from the program.

Students with poor performance or whose deadlines for becoming candidates or defending their thesis/dissertation have expired will be withdrawn from the corresponding program.

For exceptions, term extensions, and further information, please read the current Regulations for students

Doctorate students must have at least one article accepted in an indexed Journal (Journal of Citation Report) before defending their thesis.

Coppe students are evaluated with grade letters A, B, C, and D for each class, as previously mentioned, which correspond to the numerical grades below:

  • Excellent = A = 3.0
  • Good = B = 2.0
  • Average = C = 1.0
  • Failed = D = 0 (zero)

According to our regulations, an accumulated CR of 2.0 (two) or higher upon coursework completion is one of the conditions for advancing from master's or doctoral student to master's or doctoral candidate.

It is important for students to inform themselves of the additional regulations of each program regarding academic performance/achievement, which may be more restrictive or otherwise provide for particular cases.

We strongly recommend reading the applicable course regulations for a more complete overview of the procedures for admission, academic control, and the awarding of degrees, including the required number of class hours.

The Commission of Graduate Studies and Research (CPGP) is responsible for applying the academic rules at COPPE. CPGP makes several decisions that directly concern the student body and is also a bridge between Coppe and the Council of Research and Undergraduate Education (CEPG), one of the three Higher Councils at UFRJ. For more details on their role and constitution, go to: https://cpgp.daac.coppe.ufrj.br

Master's and doctoral scholarships (Capes, CNPq, and FAPERJ) are granted through the Programs where students will conduct their studies. In regards to their duration, there are 24-month master's scholarships and 48-month doctoral scholarships.
It is important to note that it is also possible to receive grants for research projects in the industrial sector. These scholarships are typically managed by each project's coordinating professors.

Academic Calendar Structure

Our Institute organizes its courses in academic quarters. They consist of 3 terms with 13 weeks and 1 with 7 weeks (4th term). Check the calendar for the current academic year below. The academic calendar incorporates deadlines for changing study plans, signing up for classes, etc.

Academic Supervision

Every Coppe student is assigned an academic supervisor, who is a professor of the Program in which they were accepted and whose role is to guide them through all matters applicable, such as class choice and preparing a study plan. When a student advances from master’s or doctoral student to master’s or doctoral candidate, they are assigned a dissertation or thesis advisor who guides them through their work schedule.

A Student’s Academic Life in Four Systems

SIGA: The Integrated Academic Management System (SIGA) is a web-based system through which students, teachers, and staff can obtain information and make some updates to their academic records.
At the beginning of each term, students must access the SIGA or go to https://portal.ufrj.br/ to sign up for classes and make changes to their class schedule. Students should consult their supervisor or academic advisor before signing up for classes.
They can also access the SIGA to view and download documents such as a statement of regular enrollment status, their CRID (Confirmation of Registration for Classes), and their academic record/transcript. Student in need of the official transcript must request it from the secretariat of their program.

SEI: The Electronic Information System (SEI) handles all students’ academic processes (e.g. credit hour transfer, requesting an examination board), all of which can be viewed via public search on the internet in the SEI/UFRJ.

CTRLCOPPE: at the end of the course, students will need to use the CtrlCoppe system. It is where students must submit/deposit their dissertation or thesis before and after the defense.

ATRIO: Atrio is the central academic management system used at Coppe. Professors, students, program staff, examination board members, co-authors, and collaborators can access the system to keep its data up to date. In addition to simplifying data collection and consolidating the information submitted to CAPES on a yearly basis for evaluation of our graduate courses, this system also provides our board of directors and program coordinators with the necessary information to implement a continuous improvement strategy.

Resources for Students

The Central Library of the Technology Center is located in Block B, 2nd floor, and is open on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Its collection focuses essentially on Science and Technology. It offers the following local and online resources: checking for book availability; borrowing books; reserving books for borrowing; interlibrary loan; database access via the Internet; bibliographic search on CD-ROM databases (databases subscribed to by the library); COMUT online; photocopy service; consultation of the microfiches at the national collective catalog of journals; consultation of the microfiches of the collective catalog of event records; request for copies of articles located abroad (BLDSC).

Registered students can use the Library's services and borrow books and periodicals and take them home. The library has access to the Technology Center's Virtual Library, with all the computers connected to its network operating exclusively with the ALEPH software. It also has access to the CAPES journal system (via the Internet).

Our Institute is fully connected to the Internet. Students can access the Internet from our computers, which are connected to the local networks of the Programs, Laboratories, and common areas. Each student will receive a personal account from their Program. It is the student's responsibility to make proper use of this account, as it enables many activities at Coppe and UFRJ by allowing access to utilities such as digital libraries, high-performance computers, and academic information systems, among others. It also allows students to access the Internet via the wireless networks in the common areas of the Programs or via the EDUROAM network, whenever it is available. After receiving an enrollment number, all students have access to the UFRJ intranet through the following web address: www.intranet.ufrj.br.
